Difference between AC, DC and EC cooling Fan - Fulltech Electric

There are several fan options, for engineers to decide when they initiate their design, in general, engineers can choose either AC or DC fan, however, the EC fan just launched recently are able to integrated the advantages of AC and DC fan, to enhance the fan efficiency and also good for energy saving.

Items DC AC EC
Operation

DC fan operates from the switch of the electric current and changes of the magnetic field.

AC fan operates from the AC voltage input and also the rotation of magnetic field from the electric current through the rotor. However, AC fan RPM is limited by the electricity frequency and can only up to 3,600RPM.

EC fan is powered by brushless DC motor and driven by electronic PCB, which includes the permanent magnet in the rotor, and a set of copper coil inside of the stator. The PCB inside of the EC motor will switch the magnet direction to keep the EC fan running.

Efficiency

DC fan is with the characteristics of high efficiency and the advantage of the speed control.

Normally, AC fan efficiency is 30% less than DC fan. EC fan is with the characteristics of high efficiency and the advantage of the speed control.

Advantage of the EC motor –
  1. Stator is controlled and driven by the electronic control panel, so no energy is wasted.
    • The energy efficiency of the AC impedance motor is approx. from 15% to 25%; AC capacitor motor will be from 30% to 50%, but the EC motor can be up to 60% to 75%
  2. AC power input is stable
  3. Controllable as DC motor
    • EC fan carries the option of speed control itself. And AC cooling fan will have to use the external device to do the speed control, however, it will change the electric wave and may jeopardize the life time of the AC fan.
